Real Conversations

ON RACISM

Some conversations about race never happen because no one knows how to begin them.

{THE AND} On Racism Edition is a tool for having them anyway, honestly, and without pretending they’re easy. Its 199 prompts open real dialogue about racial equity, prejudice, and privilege: the questions to ask yourself, and the ones to ask the people around you. It was made collaboratively with activist and author Sonya Renee Taylor, founder of The Body Is Not An Apology, and leadership facilitator Didier Sylvain, built not to settle the conversation, but to let it finally start.

199 prompts. One deck. Created to hold space for the conversations that change how we think about race.

A Deck Built to Hold Space

For Honest Conversations About Race

{THE AND} On Racism Edition asks the questions most of us never quite know how to raise, about racial equity, prejudice, and privilege. Each prompt opens real dialogue, whether you’re turning the question on yourself or asking it of the people around you.

Made to Support the Hard Parts

These conversations aren’t easy, and the deck doesn’t pretend otherwise. The prompts are designed to hold the discomfort rather than rush past it, so what feels uncomfortable becomes the place real learning and understanding happen.

100% of Profit Donated

Every dollar of profit from this edition goes to three organizations doing the work: the Equal Justice Initiative, Black Youth Project 100, and The Brotherhood/Sister Sol. Created collaboratively with Sonya Renee Taylor and Didier Sylvain — a deck accountable to the movement it comes from.

Made for the Rooms Where This Work Happens

At Home

The conversations about race that families don’t always know how to start,  with partners, with parents, across generations. A place to begin, at the kitchen table, with the people closest to you.

In the Classroom & Beyond

For educators, facilitators, and group leaders holding space for students and communities. Prompts that give structure to discussions about equity and privilege that are easy to avoid and hard to do well.

In Community

Book clubs, organizations, and groups already doing the work of building something more equitable. Questions to deepen it, moving from reading and intention toward honest conversation and what comes next.

IT'S TIME FOR

HONEST CONVERSATIONS

Each card is a place to start on the topics most of us step around, systemic racism, privilege, microaggressions, allyship, and the rest of what honest talk about race asks of us. {THE AND} On Racism Edition doesn’t hand you the answers. It gives you the questions, and a way to stay in the conversation when it gets hard.

The change we’re after doesn’t begin with a policy or a post. It begins with people willing to be honest with themselves and with each other, about what they’ve absorbed, what they’ve missed, and what they’re ready to do differently. This deck is one honest place to start.

FAQs

{THE AND} On Racism Edition is a conversation card deck from The Skin Deep, made for honest conversations about race. Its 199 prompts open real dialogue about systemic racism, privilege, prejudice, microaggressions, and allyship, questions to ask yourself and the people around you. It was created collaboratively with activist and author Sonya Renee Taylor and leadership facilitator Didier Sylvain.

100% of the profit from this edition is donated, split equally between three organizations doing this work: the Equal Justice Initiative, Black Youth Project 100, and The Brotherhood/Sister Sol. The Skin Deep doesn’t keep profit from this deck; it was made as a tool and a contribution, not a product line.

Anyone willing to have the conversation, on their own, with family across generations, among friends, in classrooms, workplaces, book clubs, and community groups. You don’t need to be an expert or an activist to use it. The prompts meet you where you are and give you somewhere honest to begin, whatever your background or starting point.

Prompts that go past slogans and into the real thing — what you’ve absorbed without noticing, what goes unsaid across race, what it actually asks to show up as an ally. They’re built to open dialogue, not to test you or assign blame. (Originals in the same spirit, not from the deck: “When did you first become aware of your own race?” “What’s a moment you stayed silent and wish you hadn’t?”)

It’s a starting point, and it’s honest about being one. A deck can’t end racism, but most people avoid these conversations because they don’t know how to begin, and a good question is a real way in. It was built with Sonya Renee Taylor and Didier Sylvain specifically to hold the discomfort rather than skip past it, and 100% of the profit goes to organizations doing the structural work a conversation alone can’t. The deck is where honesty starts, not where it’s meant to stop.

Amazing Conversation starters

I used these cards for the whole family, focusing mostly with my teen on the harder ones. The discussions that it sparked were so amazing and emotional. My teen was in tears as they realized certain things about our privilege that they'd never even considered before, and it helped point out even better ways for us to help and understand how our actions could help or hinder the antiracist movement we've been working on.

I read over some of the cards and they were amazing questions. I haven’t had a chance to play with them yet because I’m working so much but as soon as I have a chance, I will play them on Clubhouse

The questions were insightful, and I was able to use them with my antiracism group. Very well thought out!
